Hydrophilins from distant organisms can protect enzymatic activities from water limitation effects in vitro

Hydrophilins are a wide group of proteins whose defining characteristics are high hydrophilicity index (> 1.0) and high glycine content (> 6%). The transcripts of most hydrophilins accumulate in response to water deficit in organisms such as plants, fungi and bacteria. In plants, most of the known Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins belong to this group (Garay-Arroyo et al., Journal of B...

Enzymatic Degradation of Phenazines Can Generate Energy and Protect Sensitive Organisms from Toxicity

UNLABELLED Diverse bacteria, including several Pseudomonas species, produce a class of redox-active metabolites called phenazines that impact different cell types in nature and disease. Phenazines can affect microbial communities in both positive and negative ways, where their presence is correlated with decreased species richness and diversity. However, little is known about how the concentrat...

Synoviocytes protect cartilage from the effects of injury in vitro

BACKGROUND It is well documented that osteoarthritis (OA) can develop following traumatic joint injury and is the leading cause of lameness and subsequent wastage of equine athletes. Although much research of injury induced OA has focused on cartilage, OA is a disease that affects the whole joint organ. METHODS In this study, we investigated the impact of synovial cells on the progression of ...

Enzymatic activities of Legionella pneumophila and Legionella-like organisms.

The API ZYM system was used to investigate enzymatic activities of Legionella pneumophila and other Legionella-like organisms. Leucine aminopeptidase, alkaline and acid phosphatase, butyrate and caprylate esterase, and phosphoamidase activities were consistently detected in all strains tested. No evidence of myristate lipase, trypsin, chymotrypsin, or glycosidase activity was found.

Effects of Fertilizer Treatments on Antioxidant Activities and Physiological Traits of Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) under Water Limitation Conditions

Drought stress is a major environmental stress that restricts plant growth and production in the majority of agricultural fields of the world. The application of different fertilizers, especially biofertilizers and organic fertilizers, might play an important role in the production of medicinal plants in order to improve their resistance to deficit water stress. In order to evaluate the effects...
